Audio, Video and Lighting Buying Guide NZ
Audio, video and lighting gear is where a small spend can noticeably improve a room. This guide covers what to look at before you buy.
Sound
For a room, a single decent powered speaker beats several weak ones. Check the connections you actually have β Bluetooth, 3.5mm aux or USB β and confirm the speaker matches before ordering.
Video connections
HDMI carries both picture and sound on one cable, which is why it replaced the older separate leads. If you are connecting an older device, check whether you need a converter rather than a plain adapter.
Lighting a space
- Task lighting: bright and directed, for benches and desks.
- Ambient lighting: soft and general, for living spaces.
- Accent lighting: LED strips and small fittings that add depth.
LED options run cooler and cost far less to run than older bulbs, which matters with New Zealand power prices.
Cable management
Plan where cables will run before you mount anything. Clips and ties cost very little and stop the tidy setup becoming a nest within a month.
Power and safety
Use a surge-protected board for AV gear, and do not daisy-chain multi-boards.
