Electronic Components Buying Guide NZ for Hobbyists
Whether you are repairing a device, building an Arduino project or teaching yourself electronics, having the right parts on hand saves a lot of stalled evenings. This guide covers the basics.
The parts most projects start with
- Resistors: control current. Buy an assorted pack rather than single values.
- Capacitors: smooth and store charge. Note both capacitance and voltage rating.
- LEDs and switches: the visible parts of any build; grab a mixed pack.
- Breadboards and jumper wires: let you prototype without soldering.
- Development boards: Arduino-compatible and microcontroller boards for programmable projects.
Read the specs, not just the name
Components are defined by numbers: resistance in ohms, capacitance in farads, voltage and current ratings. Fitting a part with too low a voltage rating is the most common beginner mistake.
Tools worth having alongside
A soldering iron, side cutters, a multimeter and a helping-hands stand cover almost every hobby repair. A multimeter in particular turns guesswork into measurement.
Buying for repairs
If you are fixing something specific, photograph the board and note the markings on the failed component before ordering. Most parts have their value printed or colour-coded on the body.
Stock up sensibly
Assorted kits are far cheaper than buying single components and mean you can start a project the day you think of it. We ship components NZ-wide, with free delivery over $75.
