LPG and Gas Buying Guide NZ: Fittings, Hoses and Safety
LPG gear for BBQs, caravans and camp cookers is straightforward once you know which fitting you need β and safety checks matter more here than in any other category.
Know your fitting
New Zealand BBQ bottles commonly use a POL fitting, while some appliances and imported gear use different threads. Check the existing connection or take a photo of it before ordering a hose or adapter.
Hoses and regulators
Hoses perish with UV and age. Look at the date stamp and replace hoses that are cracked, sticky or hardened. The regulator controls pressure to the appliance and must match the appliance type β do not substitute.
Always leak test
After connecting, brush soapy water over the joints and turn the gas on with the appliance off. Bubbles mean a leak: turn the gas off at the bottle and re-seat or replace the fitting. Never use a flame to test.
Storing gas bottles
Store upright, outdoors, in a ventilated spot away from heat sources and out of direct sun. Never store a bottle inside a car boot, house or under a caravan bunk.
When to call a professional
Fixed installations, caravan and boat gas systems, and any appliance you are unsure of should be checked by a certified gasfitter. Portable BBQ connections are the DIY-appropriate limit for most people.
